If it works, it could set a global standard. In an effort to curb the growing environmental impact of disposable vaping products, the Canadian Vaping Association (CVA) has launched VapeCycle, a nationwide recycling initiative introduced on Earth Day in partnership with several industry stakeholders.

The program seeks to tackle e-waste concerns while reinforcing the vaping industry’s commitment to public health and environmental sustainability, according to a press release. By providing consumers and retailers with easy access to recycling resources, VapeCycle claims it can ensure responsible disposal of single-use vape batteries and devices across Canada.

“As vaping continues to serve as a vital harm reduction tool for adult smokers, the industry must also take responsibility for its ecological footprint,” said Sam Tam, president of the CVA. “VapeCycle is designed to ensure that our support for public health does not come at the expense of the environment.”

How VapeCycle works

Consumers can participate by visiting vapecycle.ca for program details and to access educational materials. Retailers enrolled in the initiative can request recycling bags and pre-paid shipping labels to send used devices to a central sorting facility. Consumers may also pick up bags from participating stores and return used products either by mail or in person.

Key Features of the Program:

  • National Reach: A coast-to-coast network of participating retailers offering drop-off points.
  • Comprehensive Recycling: All vape components will be processed in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • Industry Collaboration: The initiative brings together manufacturers committed to sustainable business practices.
  • Public Education: VapeCycle offers resources to inform Canadians about proper recycling methods.

The CVA stated that initiatives like VapeCycle are part of a broader movement within the industry to reduce smoking rates in Canada to below 5% by 2035, while also reducing e-waste and encouraging innovation in vaping technology.

“With VapeCycle, we are proving that public health advancements and environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand,” Tam said. “Canada is poised to become a global leader in sustainable vaping practices.”
