Key points:

  • The UK will implement a nationwide ban on the sale and supply of disposable vapes starting 1 June 2025.
  • Businesses found selling or possessing these items after the deadline could face unlimited fines, up to two years in prison, or both.
  • The ban aims to address environmental concerns and reduce youth vaping rates.

It’s getting close. Beginning on June 1, 2025, the sale and supply of disposable vapes will be prohibited across the United Kingdom. The legislation targets single-use vaping devices, but does not include pod devices or open systems.

Businesses, including retailers, wholesalers, and importers, must cease the sale and distribution of these products by the deadline. Non-compliance may result in severe penalties, including unlimited fines and imprisonment for up to two years, according to the UK government.

Businesses will be required to:

  • Cease purchasing new stock of disposable vapes.
  • Sell existing inventory before June 1, 2025.
  • Remove any remaining stock from sales areas and store them securely until proper disposal through registered recycling services.

Local trading standards teams are already actively working to assist local businesses in preparing for the upcoming changes, according to media reports. Officers will conduct advisory visits, focusing on retailers near schools, to discuss the ban and reinforce existing laws on underage sales and non-compliant tobacco products.

The ban is part of a broader initiative to combat environmental pollution. Research indicates that over a million disposable vapes are discarded daily in the UK, contributing to significant environmental harm due to their plastic components and lithium batteries.

Health officials have expressed concerns about the appeal of disposable vapes to younger demographics. The legislation also aims to make vaping less accessible and attractive to youth.

While disposable vapes will be banned, reusable vaping devices that are both pods and open systems will remain legal. Retailers are encouraged to transition their inventory accordingly and educate consumers about legal vape alternatives.

The vaping industry has raised concerns that the ban may inadvertently fuel black market activities, as consumers seek out prohibited products through unregulated channels. Authorities acknowledge the risk does exist and are planning a public education campaign to mitigate potential unintended consequences, according to reports.
