Swedish innovation company Emplicure has launched SERATEK, a patented bioceramic technology designed to enhance the performance of nicotine pouches, supported by peer-reviewed clinical research and consumer studies.

A 2024 pharmacokinetic study, published in July 2025, found SERATEK pouches released 80% of nicotine within the first five minutes under test conditions, faster than Swedish Match’s ZYN (Cool Mint, 6 mg), according to a press release.

In a 2025 Swedish consumer taste test with 123 users, SERATEK products were preferred over leading brands for nicotine release, flavor experience, mouthfeel, and discreteness, with more than 60% favoring the new product, the release states.

Emplicure CEO Mattias Josander said the technology is designed to accelerate the transition to a smokeless future.

“If vaccines were the life-saving breakthrough of the 20th century, nicotine pouches may well represent the public-health breakthrough of the 21st,” he said. “For smokers to truly leave cigarettes behind, alternatives must actually work: they need to deliver nicotine quickly enough to satisfy, while avoiding unnecessary high exposure. This is the balance SERATEK strikes, faster onset at lower strength.”

The company has opened a new Uppsala facility capable of producing SERATEK powder at a scale equivalent to 880 million cans annually. It also announced an expanded portfolio under the KLAR and TECTONIC brands, spanning multiple strengths and flavors, including neutral options aimed at adult users seeking discretion.

Investor Thomas Von Koch, co-founder of EQT Partners, called SERATEK a potential game-changer.

“We believe our technology can be a game-changer in accelerating both the nicotine pouch revolution and what we foresee being the transition to a smokeless world. Seratek 1.0 has already demonstrated very promising results against the world’s most sold NP products,” Von Koch said. “We can’t wait now to scale up our manufacturing facility, launch our new product innovations and accelerate the development of Seratek 2.0 and 3.0.”

The global nicotine pouch market was valued at about $8 billion in 2024 and is forecast to exceed $100 billion by 2035, with the U.S. and Nordic countries expected to drive more than two-thirds of growth, according to Barclays Equity Research.

Emplicure is showcasing SERATEK at InterTabac 2025 currently happening in Dortmund, Germany. Professor Håkan Engqvist, company founder, is scheduled to deliver a keynote address titled The Future of Nicotine and Bioceramics.
