Jonathan Drew is back to building from the ground up.
The Jonathan Drew-led venture J.Sann & Son Manufacturer & Tobacconist is officially launching its first cigar brand, Madrugada, as part of a broader multi-line debut tied to the 2026 PCA Convention & Trade Show in New Orleans.
The new company—a joint venture between Drew and Drew Estate, which is owned by Swisher—is positioned as a multi-channel platform that will extend beyond cigars into retail, hospitality and direct-to-consumer sales.
Madrugada, Spanish for “early morning,” is one of five initial cigar lines slated for announcement, marking the first tangible step in what Drew has described as a long-term project that spans both legacy and next-generation brand building.
“Dedicated to my son, JD2… Madrugada illustrates my love for him and the people of Nicaragua,” Drew said in an Instagram post announcing the brand. “When JD2 thinks about his father someday… I wish for him to remember my work ethic, my passion for people, and my love for the two countries that birthed our family craft.”

The branding maintains that personal angle throughout. J.Sann & Son—named in part after Drew’s son—features “JD2” initials on both the primary and secondary cigar bands, reinforcing the venture’s generational positioning.
Drew also launched the Thirteen Years brand at PCA. “Named after the thirteen years between selling Drew Estate and opening J.Sann & Son, ‘Thirteen Years’ is a testament to a promise made and a promise fulfilled,” Drew posted on Facebook. “‘Thirteen Years’ is autobiographical in both brand and recipe, illuminating the personal journey of a founder and a generational brand.”
Operationally, the company remains in buildout mode. All cigars will eventually be produced at a planned factory in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, which will also house a retail lounge and serve as the brand’s physical footprint centerpiece.
The facility is not yet open, and Drew has not provided a detailed production timeline, though he said additional information will be released with the brand rollout. In the interim, J.Sann & Son will debut at PCA with a dedicated presence within the Drew Estate booth, offering retailers an early look at the portfolio.
Distribution will be intentionally limited. Drew said the company will use what it calls a “Brick and Bar” model, targeting a curated group of traditional tobacconists and cigar bars rather than pursuing a broad national rollout.
The approach contrasts with Drew Estate’s larger-scale programs, including its Drew Diplomat Retail Program, and suggests a more selective, relationship-driven strategy. “We’re not trying to be everywhere,” Drew said in a phone interview with halfwheel‘s Charlie Minato, emphasizing that the initial footprint will be significantly smaller than Drew Estate’s core distribution network.
That positioning reflects both brand intent and market reality. Premium cigars continue to rely heavily on in-person retail and experiential settings, particularly in the U.S., where lounges and specialty shops remain central to consumer engagement.
J.Sann & Son appears designed to lean into that dynamic by combining product, place, and storytelling into a single platform. For the industry, the launch is notable not only for the brand itself but also for what it represents.
Drew—best known for building Drew Estate into one of the world’s largest premium cigar manufacturers—is effectively starting fresh with a more boutique, controlled model while still leveraging the infrastructure and backing of a major parent company.
The timing also aligns with a broader shift in the premium segment toward smaller-batch releases, brand storytelling, and experiential retail. Details on blends, sizes, and pricing for Madrugada and the other initial lines have not yet been disclosed.
