TerraCycle has introduced a nationwide recycling service for used nicotine vape devices, broadening disposal options for a product category that has faced increasing regulatory scrutiny due to its lithium-ion batteries and hazardous waste issues.
The new Nicotine Vape Device Collection and Recycling Service is designed for households, retailers, municipalities, schools, hotels, and other organizations looking for a compliant way to collect and recycle used vaping devices. This prepaid program includes collection containers, shipping, recycling of device components, and the safe disposal of nicotine pods through incineration, all in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
“For years, used vapes have been one of the fastest-growing waste management challenges,” said Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle. “These devices present real risks when improperly handled, and until now, there has been no clear path to a scalable recycling solution.”
The launch coincides with the ongoing efforts of regulators and waste management operators to address the rapid rise in disposable vaping products. The lithium-ion batteries found in many of these devices are becoming an increasing fire hazard in garbage trucks, transfer stations, and recycling facilities when they are damaged during collection or processing.
TerraCycle referenced a study by the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) that estimates the costs of fires caused by discarded disposable vape devices to be at least $95 million annually for U.S. waste facilities.
The service provides collection containers in various sizes, capable of holding approximately 30, 75, or 155 devices. Larger commercial customers have the option to use palletized or full truckload collection methods. According to the company, the recovered devices are dismantled and sorted by material type for recycling, while nicotine-containing pods are disposed of through regulated incineration.
The U.S. launch builds on TerraCycle’s VapeCycle program in New Zealand, where the company reports that it has processed over 1 million vape devices. This expansion also comes in response to an increasing number of state initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact of disposable nicotine products, including requirements for proper battery handling and disposal.
