A devastating fire broke out at the AJ Fernandez Cigar Factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, causing significant damage to parts of the facility, including the packaging department.
Video footage from inside the factory reveals the extent of the destruction, with flames engulfing sections of the building and firefighters working tirelessly to control the blaze.
According to multiple reports, the fire originated in the packaging department, though the extent of the overall damage remains unclear. Workers were seen removing bales from the factory, suggesting an urgent effort to salvage materials.
While other areas of the factory, including a rolling section, have been impacted by the flames, local news reports confirm that all employees and students from the company’s school were safely evacuated.
AJ Fernandez operates one of the largest cigar factories in the world, producing cigars for a variety of brands, including major names such as Altadis U.S.A. and General Cigar Co., as well as smaller brands like Foundation Cigar Co. and Artesano del Tobacco.
The company also runs another facility, the San Lotano Factory in Ocotal, which is known for manufacturing cigars for Espinosa Premium Cigars and Knuckle Sandwich Cigars, Halfwheel reports.
Following the incident, AJ Fernandez issued a statement expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support received from the community:
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who has reached out, prayed for us, and stood by our side during this incredibly difficult time. Your love and support mean more than words can express. We are beyond grateful for the strength of our community, our team, and all those who have shown up for us. Above all, we are thankful that everyone is safe. In moments like these, we’re reminded of the power of unity and we feel it now more than ever. We will move forward—united, resilient, and more committed than ever to what we stand for.”
As authorities continue their investigation into the cause of the fire, industry professionals and cigar enthusiasts alike are showing solidarity with the AJ Fernandez team. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within the cigar manufacturing industry, where handmade craftsmanship and careful storage of tobacco leaves are vital to production.
While the full impact on the company’s operations in Nicaragua remains uncertain, the resilience of the AJ Fernandez team, coupled with the support from the global cigar community, is expected to play a crucial role in the company’s recovery.
Further updates on the extent of the damage and potential operational disruptions are anticipated in the coming days.
