Italy has officially recognized the Toscano cigar brand as a “Historical Trademark,” emphasizing the product’s longstanding significance in the country’s tobacco and cultural heritage.
The Italian Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy granted the designation, according to manufacturer Manifatture Sigaro Toscano (MST), which announced the recognition in a press release.
The status is reserved for companies and brands that have been used continuously for over 50 years and are closely linked to their region of origin, reports L’Amateur de Cigare. MST said the designation positions Toscano “among the Italian excellences recognized and appreciated worldwide,” while strengthening the brand’s heritage and economic significance.
“This recognition represents an important milestone for Antico Toscano and for MST,” said Stefano Mariotti, chief executive officer of Manifatture Sigaro Toscano. “It confirms the value of a production tradition that, for more than two centuries, has combined territory, artisanal expertise and quality.”
The company states that this recognition also enhances efforts to protect the brand’s authenticity in global markets. The origins of the Toscano cigar date back to 1815 in Florence. According to company history, a summer rainstorm soaked tobacco that had been left out to dry, causing an unexpected fermentation process that created the distinctive flavor profile that would later define the Toscano.
Today, Toscano cigars are crafted with Kentucky tobacco grown in Italy, which is fire-cured and fermented before being rolled into their traditional shape. Unlike many other cigars, Toscano cigars are often broken in half before lighting.
To mark the occasion, MST announced it will release a special edition cigar. The commemorative product is already available in Italy and is expected to reach additional international markets in the coming months.
