Top Takeaways:

  • Market focus: Nigeria emerges as a key growth market for next-gen nicotine, with a $4 billion tobacco sector.
  • Industry alignment: NUBIZ and GINN expand partnership to push harm reduction dialogue in Africa.
  • Regulatory gap: Alternative products gaining traction as laws remain centered on combustible tobacco.

Africa is coming into sharper focus for next-generation nicotine.

NUBIZ and Global Institute for Novel Nicotine (GINN) are deepening their partnership through a new industry-facing initiative in Nigeria, positioning the region as a key growth market for smoke-free products.

The two groups will convene the first African Roundtable on Tobacco Harm Reduction in Lagos on May 30, bringing together regulators, medical experts, vendors, and international stakeholders to discuss evidence-based approaches to reducing smoking-related harm.

The event, part of NUBIZ’s broader platform linked to InterTabac, signals a more coordinated push into emerging markets, where regulatory frameworks and product availability are still evolving. NUBIZ is an international trade fair for alternative products and part of InterTabac, the world’s largest nicotine trade show.

For GINN, the roundtable is positioned as a step toward broader continental collaboration.

Centered on the theme “Reducing Smoking Harm in Africa: Practical Pathways for Change,” the one-day event will focus on scientific evidence, regulatory pathways, and market development strategies, along with real-world insights into product adoption and consumer behavior.

A follow-up retail visit on May 31 is expected to give participants on-the-ground exposure to how alternative nicotine products are distributed and marketed in Nigeria.

The location is strategic.

Nigeria is one of Africa’s largest tobacco markets, estimated at more than $4 billion, with a growing population and rising interest in modern nicotine formats—particularly oral products. At the same time, regulatory frameworks in the country remain largely focused on traditional tobacco, leaving newer categories in a developing policy environment.

That gap presents both an opportunity and a risk.

Organizers say the expanded collaboration between NUBIZ and GINN aims to build a platform for knowledge exchange, innovation, and industry alignment in markets where smoking rates remain a public health challenge and alternatives are still gaining traction.
