Top Takeaways:
- Growth surge: UK nicotine pouch market jumps 95% year over year as consumer interest accelerates
- Search signal: England leads overall demand, while Scotland records the fastest growth (+33%), indicating expanding regional adoption
- Urban drivers: Major cities—led by Edinburgh, London, and Bristol—are fueling curiosity, with VELO and ZYN dominating brand searches
The numbers—and the searches—are pointing in the same direction. The UK nicotine pouch market is accelerating rapidly, with the category growing 95% year-over-year in 2024, according to new data from Haypp Group, as consumer curiosity continues to spread across the country.
Search data provides a real-time view of where that demand is building. England leads the UK in overall interest, with a Google Trends score of 61 out of 100 over the past year, making it the primary driver of nicotine pouch-related searches.
But growth is unevenly distributed. Scotland, while trailing in total volume with a score of 47, recorded the fastest increase in interest—up 33%—highlighting a market that is rapidly gaining momentum.
Across the UK, even regions with lower overall activity are showing engagement, particularly around the term “snus,” which remains widely searched despite being illegal in the country. Industry observers note that the term is often used interchangeably with legal nicotine pouches because of their similar format.
At the city level, the trend is even clearer. Edinburgh ranks as the UK’s most engaged market on a per capita basis, with 2,429 searches per 100,000 people, followed closely by London and Bristol. Other urban centers—including Leeds, Coventry, and Newcastle—also show strong search activity, reinforcing the role of major cities as hubs for early adoption.
Brand interest reflects the broader shift. VELO leads all UK brand searches with more than 163,000 annual queries, followed by ZYN with 111,000 and Nordic Spirit with just over 70,000. Smaller brands such as Fumi, KILLA, and Helwit are also gaining traction, indicating the category is expanding beyond a handful of dominant players.
For industry stakeholders, the implications are evident. “The UK nicotine pouch market is undergoing a notable transformation,” said Markus Lindblad, head of legal and external affairs at Haypp. “In 2024, the category nearly doubled in size… a reflection of increasing awareness and understanding of the product amongst nicotine users.”
Lindblad cited regulatory developments as a contributing factor, including the planned disposable vape ban and broader tobacco legislation, which may be prompting consumers to explore alternative nicotine formats. “Online searches offer an interesting window into this curiosity,” he said. “They reveal which cities are most engaged… and even hint at where the category could grow in the coming years.”
The trend is not limited to the UK. Globally, the U.S. and Canada generate the highest search volumes for nicotine pouches, underscoring the category’s rapid expansion across major markets. For the nicotine industry, the takeaway is increasingly familiar. Demand is shifting—and fast.
And in the case of nicotine pouches, the data suggests that the shift is only just beginning.
