  • Incident impact: Fire causes about $100,000 in damage at tobacco processing facility
  • Operational note: Sprinkler system contained blaze, limiting disruption
  • Status: No injuries reported; cause remains under investigation

A fire at a tobacco processing facility in North Carolina caused localized damage but had little impact on operations. The blaze broke out on April 17 at a facility operated by Alliance One International in Wilson, a key hub for U.S. leaf processing and export.

Authorities said the fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, primarily limited to a customer-facing area of the building.

“Upon arrival, a fire was located in a customer area,” Wilson Fire/Rescue Services Deputy Chief James P. Campbell said. “The fire was extinguished by the sprinkler system before the fire department arrived. Three sprinkler heads activated and controlled the fire. The fire/smoke damage was controlled to the area of origin. Fire crews conducted an overhaul of the area to locate any hidden fires.”

That early suppression was critical. Wilson County firefighters quickly brought the situation under control, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Despite the incident, operations at the site remained largely unaffected.

Six firefighting vehicles and 19 firefighters responded to the blaze. Campbell estimated damage losses to property to be $75,000 and losses to contents to be $25,000.

Alliance One is one of the world’s major independent leaf tobacco merchants, with processing and storage facilities across key growing regions. Its Wilson operation handles, processes, and prepares tobacco for both domestic use and export markets.
